Evaluation

Evaluation

Here our group has the fully completed and finished video of our 90 second movie DepicT. L’Espirit Noir. This is then followed on by an evaluation on the camera work, the mise-en-scene, the editing and the sound.

The camera work
I think that the camera work that has been used has been used rather well. We have used a variety of different shots in our 90 second movie DepicT. They are from wide angles to close up, from medium shots to over the shoulder shots. The first scene is a close up of the detectives face (myself) that has got the effect of the blinds going over the face. This then makes the audience feel as if that she is maybe trapped in a rather dark room. I am also holding a glass of whisky which symbolises that I am a typical detective that sits in there dark office late at night drinking.  The next scene is a point of view shot that is showing all of the paper work that the detective is looking at on her desk. The then have the camera panning from one side of the room to the other as another walks into the room towards the detective. We see a medium shot of these characters exchanging a photograph. We finished this scene with a fade out over the shoulder of the detective as she turns the photograph over to find a name of a park.

The second scene starts off with the camera moving upwards showing a medium shot of the forest that things are going to start happening in. We then watch the detective walk in and look at the picture that she has to check that this is the address that is on the back. The next one shot is another medium with the detective putting the photograph back in her pocket and walking further into the forest to find a dead body. The over the shoulder shot shows how the detective had knelt down to see the victim, and the next shot then shows what she is seeing so that the audience knows what is happening. We then had the camera focus on the detective with a close up as she feels with horror (tries to), then to a medium shot as she stands up with fear of hearing a noise in the bushes and thinks the killer may still be there. In fear of seeing someone run really fast past her we then change to a hand held camera as she runs back through the forest trying to escape the killer. We then had to add another shot with a point of view shot of her head turning to check if there was still anyone there, seeing whether she was safer now. To then have a medium shot of another killer that is jumping out to axe her in the head, the close up of her face shows how the life is leaving her body and collapses on the floor. The last shot we have faded out with a medium shot of both of the killers walking deeper into the forest with just the one turning around and taking the mask off. This has then revealed that it was the very person who gave the detective the photography in the first place.

Mise-en-scene
For the movie we only had two different scenes. The first one was set up to seem like a typical detective’s office. Dark and mysterious with it being mostly empty other than the paperwork on the desk and the bottles of drink. We started with the detective thinking, being stuck on a case holding a half empty glass of whisky, to then have someone knock at the door and walk in to give a Polaroid picture to her. This was a picture of a forest with the name Meadow Park turned over on the back. We end the scene after the detective has had the time to think about whether or not to end up going there.

The second scene is all in the forest, we had carried on as if the detective perused the information that she was given, maybe it is a lead to really help with tough case. We had started the scene off with a view of the forest just before the detective walks in to check that this is the place on the back of the photograph. Then she carried on to find a dead body just lying on the floor, to then hear that the killer might just still be there, after a rustle within the trees was heard. After running away in panic she is then confronted and then killed by the very person that gave her the information that could have helped her to crack this hard case. To end this scene we had the two killers walking away from the camera further into the forest with just the one who killed the detective, to turn and look back to show the audience that it was him all along who planned to kill the detective.

Editing
Our group had started the editing a little early as we had managed to complete the filming and where rather happy with the outcome of how each shot had ended up. To start it off we put the first clip on and changed it to the length that we needed it and put on the movie noir effects. However for the rest of the beginning scene we decide that we would copy the effects to each clip once we had sorted out the timeline. After this we then got the music that Connor had composed himself and added that to the first scene to help create the typical noir detectives office. We hadn’t taken overly long to complete this so we had left plenty of time in order to finish the rest of the movie.

We then moved on to start on the second scene that was within the forest. The first to go on was the video clip to make sure that the audience knew where we were going.  We then checked that they were all in order and that we had been sticking to the timing that we set each clip to be on our story board, this was to make sure that the movie was not going to exceed the 90 seconds task that had been set.

After all of the clips had been set in place at the correct timing we then went on to making sure that every scene had the same effects that make it stand out to the movie noir that it is meant to be. The music was next to being sorted out. We had placed the second set of music that Connor had composed himself, and made sure that it was all within the time of each hit and step. This had made the movie even more of a noir. This would be because of the music, the editing to the colours in the scene and the costumes that the detective was wearing (the coat).

Sound
All of the sound that has been used in this short movie was all composed by Connor. This saved us from having to check out many different websites for royalty free sound that we could have used. Having music composed for the movie meant that we were able to chop and change pieces to be able to fit where we wanted it to. The music adds more drama to what’s happening on the screen, well it makes my acting look seem a little better than it is. Most of the beats that you are able to hear all go with some form of action that is throughout the entire 90 second movie.

Feedback
We had sat down as a class and watched all of the classes 90 second movies. After each one we then said some good and bad points to each one.

My life as death
The good points of this 90 second movie is that its rather funny, had good characters and the music fits really well. However the negative point about this is that the first shot is a little dark and the background noise affects the movie.

Shellshocked
The good point of this movie are that its funny, gives distinctive characters and the music they have used fits rather well with the whole movie. However the bad points are that maybe some of the voices are over acted and another is that one of the snails is out of focus.

L'Espirit Noir
Then we got to our one... The good points that where given was that the music that Connor composed himself has been made to fit the movie very well. The camera work was pretty good, the lighting was well used and some of the acting (Connor and his pose and myself when I was dying) where funny. However a bad point was that the transitions are maybe not as good as what they could have been.

Prop Horror
The good point of this movie are that the acting was pretty good, there was a good and easy understanding story line, the editing and putting it altogether was good and it does create some good tension. However the bad points are the camera work, The character walked one way then walked back. Another is maybe the scream, not too sure on that.

Sweet Dreams
The good points about this one is there is a really good story line, it is pretty creepy and has good camera angles that are capturing the characters. The negative of this one however is maybe the little too bright lighting and that it was a little hard to understand, maybe having to watch it a few times.

The  Cookie Monster
The positives about this movie is that it is funny, has a really good story, mood lighting, good camera techniques with the focus changing and also the different ways that they done the credits compared to the rest of the groups. The negative about this is the continuity error, with the full to empty cup.
